I graduated with the second Jog Belfast group in summer 2014 and believe me, for a couch to 5k, I was firmly on the couch! My daughter and I came to Victoria Park twice a week faithfully for those 10 weeks, running longer each session. It was amazing looking back a few weeks and realising how my fitness and stamina were improving. The coaches were so encouraging and some how helped us to actually enjoy the sessions!
For me, graduation day was tough. Looking back, it's probably because everyone else did an extra homework run like they were told to. I hadn't listened to that part.. .! So after the first parkrun I decided 'I've got the t-shirt, I'm done!' Yet during that week I figured that I couldn't let my new level of fitness and activity go to waste, so I kept on coming to parkrun. It very quickly became a part of my life. The Running Family is definitely a friendly one!
I would encourage anyone to complete a couch to 5k and continue with parkrun. My weekends are not right if I don't start with a parkrun now! After graduation, keep going!! Join a club or meet up with friends during the week for social runs. It makes all the difference.
I'm now a member of Ballydrain Harriers. I have completed a few 10ks, have dabbled in Cross Country and in March 2017 I did the previously unthinkable and completed my first half marathon. I will never be super speedy...and I don't care one bit! But I am a runner. I love running outside in the fresh air, on my own or with others and I am a healthier person. Thank you Jog Belfast!
