I started Jog Belfast Victoria Park programme in September 2015 as my friend Joanne had graduated in June and she was volunteering with our group. I wasn’t convinced but she persuaded me to give it a go.
I remember the first night puffing and panting and that was only after Mary’s extensive Warm-Up, then to be told we were to run/jog one minute and walk one minute. I thought there was no way I was going to be able to do that and waiting for the whistle after running one minute seemed never-ending. But I got through it and was really happy with myself on the way home afterwards.
The program takes you steadily towards a 5KM time run and being able run the whole park run. I won’t tell you what we did each week as I don’t want to spoil it but I can say with certainty “you can do it and the great coaches and volunteers will help you along the way”.
Graduation day is fab, you get lovely new t-shirts and so much encouragement from all the other park runners. There will be a special mention in the pre-run talk and all followed by a lovely cuppa and a bun.
After my graduation I decided to volunteer as to be honest without the volunteers there would be no program!! I have volunteered at a few programs and have met many lovely people. It was at volunteering that i might a group of girls who invited us to run with them after the program was over.
We now have a running group who help and encourage each other as well as the odd night out. We have ran many races like Runher, Run in the Dark etc and Suzanne has even ran the Great North Run last year.
We keep each other motivated and not only have i found a new love of running but I have made amazing friends along the way.
If you haven’t signed up yet, Please do it as you won’t regret it!!!!
