I started jog Belfast to get some fitness after years of joining different exercise classes and never really enjoying them or sticking with them. My sisters were both enjoying the Jog Belfast programme and encouraged me to go along.
At the beginning I found it tough to be able to staying running without a break for even 1 minute, but the training programme shows you how to build on this and the support of the trainers was excellent and encouraged me through this.
I found myself getting better and more capable each time I went, there was people of all age groups and abilities which meant I didn’t feel out of place or as though I could not keep up.
At the end of the Jog Belfast programme I completed graduation at the 5km park run and felt amazing. Our group really bonded and we became great friends.
A lot of us then proceeded to joining the North Belfast Harriers, I felt I struggled joining the running group out on the road and thought I should give up at this point.
But once again with help and encouragement of the group and the mentors I have now came a long way.
Running is part of who I am now and I am a completely different person for it, I am a lot more confident and also a lot lighter and fitter. It is great for mental health and allowed me to de-stress after stopping smoking.
And I am now delighted to say I am in training for my very first half marathon.
I never thought running for longer than 1 minute could build up to training for a half marathon.
